Blog 7: A Career-Related Website OR an Expert in Your Field

Hi everyone!

I hope everybody is fine. Today I decided to talk about an expert in my field that I met for a university job the last year,

Marian Bantjes is a designer, typographer, writer and illustrator. She works internationally from her base on a small island off the west coast of Canada, near Vancouver. She is a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), and regularly speaks about her work and thoughts at conferences and events worldwide. She doesn't have formal design studies but her career spans 3 stages: she worked as a book typesetter from 1984–1994, she co-founded and ran a graphic design studio, Digitopolis, from 1994–2003 and since 2003 she has worked on her own as a designer/artist/letterer.

She is known for her detailed and precise vector art, her obsessive hand work, her patterning and ornament. Also for resorting to unusual techniques with common materials such as making frames with noodles or writing with sugar. Among other techniques that can be taken as references.

With her work, Bantjes seeks to surprise, to make people imagine things. Her purpose is to reach as many people as possible with her work, to make them observe it and get something out of it. She wants people to feel special and unique, this is the reason why I like her. I hope that someday I can achieve this. Apart, I admire her creativity and perseverance.

150 Valentine cards that she hand-made, each different from the other, and then distributed them to her mailing list
